From Disappointing to Defective – Is There Any Team Want to Win the Big Game This Season?
No professional sports organization promotes competitive balance like the NFL: it's their core marketing message. But through ten games in this campaign, this is not a competition that is equally balanced between the good, the bad and the mediocre. Instead, it's a scenario where the bulk of franchises are merely fine.
Clear Picture in NFC
In the NFC, at least, we see clearer definition. The Rams along with the Seahawks (both at 7-2) look like the most complete teams across the league, and delivered blowout wins in their weekend matchups. The Eagles with six wins despite their struggles still have among the most gifted lineups throughout football, comparable to Green Bay (five wins, two losses, one tie). Detroit as well (6-3 standing), who have been inconsistent in trench play and have been dealing with tension on their coaching staff, have proven they're capable of dominating strong franchises. For all five, you can still easily envision a Super Bowl path.
AFC Confusion
Over in the AFC, postseason landscape is a jumbled mess. Your four division leaders after ten games: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (all standing at eight wins) along with Pittsburgh (five wins, four losses). Read that again. Not the Chiefs. Not the Bills. Not the Ravens or Bengals. The usual contenders, backed by premier quarterback talent, have either glaring roster weaknesses or have been hit by injuries.
Parity Mechanics
In some ways, it’s the league’s ideal. But watching this year’s four division leaders within the conference continues to seem unusual. Aspects of each franchise meet championship standards, but not in their entirety. If you were asked to lock in your conference championship predictions at this moment, could you assuredly choose any among these four teams?
Squad Examinations
Indianapolis Outlook
First, examining Indianapolis, Daniel Jones hasn't yet achieved pumpkin status. But the last two weeks have caused alarm. He has returned to turning over the ball and struggling against pressure. He took seven sacks versus Atlanta in the weekend game, and endured a short sequence during which he tossed an intercepted pass and fumbled three times. This follows he committed turnovers five times against the Steelers.
Indianapolis' offensive unit performed well initially as Jones prevented the disaster plays. Jonathan Taylor and the offensive line make the Colts good enough to survive periodic mistakes, as they did in Berlin. But Jones returning to his historically mistake-heavy play would finish postseason aspirations.
Patriots Examination
New England appears somewhat similar. A year ago, they were a punchline. Currently, they represent the league’s happiest surprise and the hottest team across the league post seven wins in a row. If not for fumbling away a winnable game facing Pittsburgh, they would currently hold a 9-1 record with the best record. Last season, they were old and slow. Now they’re inexperienced, speedy and bold. Still, it’s hard to ignore the weakness of New England's opponents. They have faced the easiest slate in the league, yet vulnerabilities remain. Drake Maye has taken sacks thirty-five times – among the highest totals – with several hits he absorbed on Sunday were vicious. Over time, those hits add up.
Broncos Situation
The Broncos are also 8-2, and the perception remains like they're nervously waiting. Their quarterback has been erratic, and the offensive unit laboring, as the defense handles the majority of the work. Without serviceable quarterback play, Denver cannot intimidate any playoff team. The Chargers are also contending within their division holding a 7-2 record, however, health issues within their blocking corps will present challenges to mount a deep postseason tilt.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh exists, inexplicably frontrunning their division notwithstanding receiving 25-10 by the Chargers during prime time. They've been outscored overall, their defensive unit frequently falters, and Aaron Rodgers’ limitations during his career phase regularly manifest. At 5-4, they're barely clinging, yet Baltimore, with Lamar Jackson healthy again with manageable games ahead, have won three consecutive. This development isn't entirely shocking that the Ravens have narrowed the gap to just one game, but that it has arrived so quickly highlights deficiencies within Pittsburgh’s inconsistencies. Considering the Ravens opened with a 1-5 record yet still appear capable of division victory is telling about the conference as a whole.
Historical Favorites
The Ravens represent a segment within a trio of powerhouses – joined by Buffalo and Kansas City – driven by elite quarterback play, who could still create the most fear among competitors if they made the playoffs. They're the teams everyone hopes to avoid, yet Kansas City and Buffalo cannot get out of their own way.
Buffalo Bills
Previously, Buffalo was celebrating following victory over Kansas City. During Sunday's action they experienced one of the most disappointing losses during the campaign. They didn't merely fall against Miami; they were embarrassed, dropping a 30-13 road game. The Dolphins secured their first triumph against Buffalo in more than 1,000 days.
