Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Still unsure,” he added. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities shared video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.

“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was projected as a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
