The British tennis star earned the biggest victory of his professional journey by rallying from a lost first set to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

While he had earlier beaten Alcaraz on two separate matches, this triumph represents Norrie's first ever success over a sitting world No 1.

"Enormous. Incredibly significant for me," said Norrie, who joins as the latest UK male player in the record books to beat a global number one. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I lost in the first round of qualifying rounds here. I just sought to appreciate my game in the closing months of the year. To secure a triumph like this, it's the most significant success of my professional life, my first win over the world No 1 and arguably the most confident competitor in the world right now."

Norrie, seeded No 31, also halted Alcaraz's dominant sequence of nine straight final appearances and 17 successive elite tournament victories, which was the best series of performances in the Spaniard's young professional path.

Alcaraz seemed to be progressing easily to a win in the beginning as he cruised past the first set. Nevertheless, Norrie steadily fought his way into the match by serving with greater precision and dragging the Spanish opponent into extended, demanding points. His relentless steadiness and dependability slowly took its toll.

For much of the match, the world number one delivered strong serves but he found it challenging to get his timing right off his groundstrokes. The rising talent looked especially uneasy executing his primary weapon, which has been the most effective stroke in the sport for a large part of this season, committing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a total of 54 errors.
