According to a former high-ranking official from the Metropolitan police, police departments are now required to disclose the racial identities of suspects in response to a surge in extremist conjecture on online networks.

Early Sunday, British Transport Police reported the detainment of two individuals after a multiple knife attacks on a railway carriage in the region. An individual, a British citizen of black heritage aged 32, and a second, a 35-year-old of Caribbean descent, were taken into custody. Subsequently, the 35-year-old was released with no charges, and authorities stated he was not involved in the incident.

New Guidance to Fight False Claims

In August, revised directives were rolled out to address the dissemination of false narratives on digital platforms, which had escalated after the deadly attack of three schoolgirls in Southport last summer.

Yet, advocates warned that this move could unintentionally encourage an excessive focus on the ethnicity of suspects and fuel further rightwing conspiracy theories when details are withheld with the public.

Dal Babu, who served in the UK's largest police force, described the requirement for law enforcement to reveal the ethnicity of individuals in incidents involving ethnic minorities as an "unforeseen outcome".

“At the time the guidelines were introduced, I cautioned that there might be a risk of police being expected to disclose details in every instance,” he stated.

He expressed understanding for his former colleagues in the police, explaining that they are “in a no-win situation”. “They are under pressure because there is such intense speculation from the far right on social media after every major incident about the background of suspects.”

Response from Officials

A Conservative MP, whose district includes Huntingdon, described it “sad” but essential for authorities to swiftly release the ethnicities of those arrested.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he remarked, adding that social media are used to advance narratives, making it vital for police to provide accurate information to counter rumors.

Extremist Manipulation of Events

Prior to the police announcement, conservative figures had called for a quicker action. As an example, the shadow home secretary pushed for prompt sharing of identity details, while Nigel Farage posted on X that the public needed to know “without delay”.

Additionally, far-right social media accounts sought to manipulate the event. A profile named “British Patriot”—boosting thousands of followers—shared an baseless allegation that a knife-wielding man had been yelling “Allahu Akbar”.

Persistent Doubts

Even after authorities clarified that the suspects were British nationals, some individuals continued to insinuate that details was being withheld. Ben Habib claimed it was “almost inconceivable” that the attack was unrelated to terrorism, despite official statements to the opposite.

Origin of the Directives

These protocols were developed by the UK police leadership body in recognition of “public concerns” and to ensure law enforcement procedures were “fit for purpose in an age of rapid information spread”.

This move came soon after a political party alleged that officials of concealing the details and migrant background of individuals accused in a different incident in a UK county.

Precedents

In May, when a car ploughed into crowds marking Liverpool FC’s winning, Merseyside police revealed that the suspect was white and British to dispels myths of a terrorist attack by an Asian man.

Police leaders emphasized that decisions on releasing such information would be made by individual police forces, taking into account broader moral and legal factors. Confirming a suspect’s immigration status would be handled by the UK interior ministry, not police.
