"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" a text pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: I also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are not alone. Multiple celebrated supporters have openly petitioned for the role.

The evidence suggests something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy contenders.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a inseparable trio. Their visuals frequently feature them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That's the ultimate compliment. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage others to make music."

"And thus all gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Recognition

The band are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major achievement," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the female artists that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record came out of a period of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that unique in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics detail breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound toughness required a new sound – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The trio's openness shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating tales.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Legacy

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their standing in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an worldwide fan base.

However Haim will forever be their number one focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "There is no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
