We are analyzing images and video shared earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site of where the images were from was based on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
