Vince Gilligan Discloses He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... Currently.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would turn into a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

With the first season of the popular sci-fi show coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team recently discussed the viewer reception and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.

Regarding the Incredible Viewer Reception

One could easily to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to avoid both.

“The experience is akin to an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by audience chatter.”

“Better to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.

The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan See the Finale of Pluribus?

So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some potential directions about where the show might end up,” he states. “but we are always ready to throw out a good idea for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Then again, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.

“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Then again, why mess with the iconic TV endings?

“My dream is Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV+.
